July 9, 2021

TO:
Honorable Joan Huffman, Chair, Senate Committee on Jurisprudence

FROM:
Jerry McGinty, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB9 by West (Relating to requiring public schools to provide instruction and materials and adopt policies relating to the prevention of child abuse, family violence, and dating violence.), As Introduced

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Education Code relating to requiring public schools to provide instruction and materials and adopt policies relating to the prevention of child abuse, family violence, and dating violence.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) assumes the bill's provisions could be implemented using existing resources.

Local Government Impact

According to TEA, there could be costs for local districts to implement the required instruction, including professional development training for teachers and developing or purchasing instructional materials and resources. Districts may also incur costs to provide the required parental notification.
