R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Following a 16-month closure during the COVID-19 |
|
pandemic, the Calaboose African American History Museum in San |
|
Marcos celebrated its official reopening on June 19, 2021; and |
|
WHEREAS, The event took place on Juneteenth, which |
|
commemorates the emancipation of African American slaves in the |
|
U.S.; the CAAHM reopening celebration featured a talk by |
|
Dr. Leonard Moore, the George Littlefield Professor of American |
|
History at The University of Texas at Austin, and showcased a new |
|
exhibit that depicts generations of local Black-owned businesses; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Established in 1997, CAAHM is located inside the |
|
first jail in Hays County, which was constructed in 1873; when the |
|
second county jail was built in 1884, the calaboose was used to |
|
house Black prisoners; the building served as a USO facility for |
|
Black soldiers during World War II and as a community center and |
|
café; it was designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in |
|
1990; and |
|
WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Calaboose African American |
|
History Museum has dedicated itself to preserving African American |
|
history and culture in Hays County, and in so doing, it has |
|
established itself as an invaluable educational resource and a |
|
center of support for the community; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commemorate the reopening |
|
of the Calaboose African American History Museum and extend to all |
|
those associated with the institution sincere best wishes for the |
|
future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the museum and its staff as an expression of high |
|
regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
