R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Each January, residents of Arlington gather to pay |
|
tribute to the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. |
|
at the city's Advancing the Dream celebration; and |
|
WHEREAS, Coordinated by the Arlington Martin Luther King, Jr. |
|
Celebration Committee, the four-day-long event is one of the |
|
largest celebrations of its kind in the State of Texas; for more |
|
than 30 years, it has brought together area residents to reflect on |
|
the enduring influence of America's foremost civil rights icon, |
|
while affirming their commitment to carrying forward his legacy by |
|
creating lasting change in their community; and |
|
WHEREAS, The event features a presentation of scholarships to |
|
essay and art contest winners, as well as a step show that includes |
|
drum lines from local school marching bands, spoken word |
|
performances, and an ecumenical service; on the final day, |
|
attendees are encouraged to participate in the MLK Day of Service by |
|
taking part in volunteer projects; and |
|
WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Advancing the Dream |
|
celebration has provided Arlington residents with the opportunity |
|
to memorialize Dr. King and to rededicate themselves to the ideals |
|
of peace, freedom, and equality that he championed; now, therefore, |
|
be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate Arlington's |
|
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Advancing the Dream celebration and |
|
extend to the organizers and participants sincere best wishes for a |
|
meaningful and memorable event; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the Arlington Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration |
|
Committee as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of |
|
Representatives. |
