BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Roughly 400,000 Texans suffer from Alzheimer's disease and related conditions. In Texas alone more than one million individuals served as an unpaid caregiver to a person suffering from Alzheimer's. Acknowledging the severity of Alzheimer's and recognizing the tireless service provided by caregivers, H.B. 3773 provides for the designation of an annual Alzheimer's Awareness Day.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE IMPACT

It is the committee's opinion that this bill does not expressly create a criminal offense, increase the punishment for an existing criminal offense or category of offenses, or change the eligibility of a person for community supervision, parole, or mandatory supervision.

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

It is the committee's opinion that this bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, department, agency, or institution.

ANALYSIS

H.B. 3773 amends the Government Code to designate September 21 as Alzheimer's Awareness Day to increase awareness of individuals who are suffering from dementia and to express appreciation to the caregivers of Alzheimer's patients for the services and care provided to the patients. The bill requires that Alzheimer's Awareness Day be regularly observed by appropriate programs and activities.
