R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed attorney drew to a close with |
|
the death of Nathan Butler Schattman on December 28, 2020, at the |
|
age of 50; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born on July 20, 1970, to Michael D. Schattman and |
|
Mary Ellen Brannigan Schattman, Nathan Schattman was party to a |
|
precedent-setting legal case even before his birth; after his |
|
mother was fired for being pregnant with him, she sued to regain her |
|
job, and with the help of ACLU lawyer and future Supreme Court |
|
justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the case helped result in a new legal |
|
standard, making it illegal to fire a woman for pregnancy; and |
|
WHEREAS, A 1987 graduate of Nolan Catholic High School, |
|
Mr. Schattman earned his bachelor's degree from Georgetown |
|
University in 1991 and his law degree from The University of Texas |
|
at Austin School of Law in 1994; he was sworn into the State Bar of |
|
Texas by his father, Judge Schattman, and he began his legal career |
|
by serving as briefing attorney for the chief justice of the Second |
|
Court of Appeals in Fort Worth; recognized as a top attorney five |
|
times by Fort Worth magazine and as a rising star in Texas Monthly, |
|
he enjoyed a successful career as a corporate litigator and a labor |
|
and employment lawyer, most recently for Brown, Proctor & Howell, |
|
LLP; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Schattman was a loving brother to his sisters, |
|
Virginia and Rita, and a devoted uncle to his nieces and nephew, |
|
Rachel, Amy, Eliza, and Bret; he was active in Democratic politics, |
|
and he was a loyal fan of the Georgetown University Hoyas and The |
|
University of Texas Longhorns; he delighted in the time he spent |
|
traveling to Portugal and Brazil, and he also enjoyed golfing, |
|
science fiction, and Irish whiskey; and |
|
WHEREAS, Nathan Schattman lived a life that was rich in |
|
personal and professional achievements, and he will forever be a |
|
source of inspiration to those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be |
|
it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Nathan Butler |
|
Schattman and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and many |
|
friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Nathan |
|
Butler Schattman. |
