R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Waxahachie High School coaching great Lonnie Gaylor |
|
has been named one of the top 100 Texas high school basketball |
|
coaches of all time by the University Interscholastic League; and |
|
WHEREAS, In celebration of 100 years of UIL basketball, the |
|
organization gathered a group of experts and historians to honor |
|
the 100 greatest coaches from the sport's illustrious history; and |
|
WHEREAS, Coach Gaylor began his career as a basketball coach |
|
in 1972 at Nacogdoches High School; after five seasons with the |
|
Dragons, he enjoyed a successful four-year run with Marlin High |
|
before taking charge of the Graham High School program; during his |
|
outstanding 16-year tenure at the school, the team had undefeated |
|
regular seasons in 1984 and 1995, and the 1996 squad competed in the |
|
3A state title game; he helped the Steers compile an undefeated |
|
record of 40 wins and zero losses in district play in his last four |
|
seasons at the helm; and |
|
WHEREAS, Arriving at Waxahachie High School in 1997, Coach |
|
Gaylor guided the Indians to eight postseason appearances in 11 |
|
seasons, including two trips to the regional round of the state |
|
playoffs; after 36 years coaching basketball, he retired in 2008, |
|
leaving behind an impressive legacy; he tallied 706 career |
|
victories as a head coach and was inducted into the Texas |
|
Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2016; and |
|
WHEREAS, A graduate of Jacksonville High School, Coach Gaylor |
|
competed as a member of the Jacksonville College basketball squad |
|
before earning both bachelor's and master's degrees from Stephen F. |
|
Austin State University; an influential member of his profession, |
|
he served as a board member, board secretary, and president of the |
|
Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and as director of the TABC |
|
Camp of Champs; he remains active in athletics as the coach of the |
|
Waxahachie High girls' golf team; and |
|
WHEREAS, Over the course of a basketball coaching career |
|
spanning more than three and a half decades, Lonnie Gaylor |
|
exemplified the passion, dedication, and commitment to excellence |
|
that are the hallmarks of the best coaches, and he is indeed |
|
deserving of this prestigious UIL recognition; now, therefore, be |
|
it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Lonnie Gaylor on being selected as |
|
one of the top 100 Texas high school basketball coaches of all-time |
|
by the University Interscholastic League and extend to him sincere |
|
best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Coach Gaylor as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
