R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Honorable John Board retired as judge of the |
|
181st Judicial District in October 2020, drawing to a close two |
|
decades of exemplary service to the citizens of Potter and Randall |
|
Counties; and |
|
WHEREAS, First appointed to the bench in August 2000 by |
|
Governor George W. Bush to fill out the term of the previous judge, |
|
John Board was then placed on the ballot by the local Republican |
|
Party chairs and elected to the position in November of that year; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, In 2007, Judge Board helped create the |
|
Accountability Court to address offenders who violated probation, |
|
usually because of problems with drugs or alcohol; in October 2010, |
|
he played a vital role in the establishment of a regional drug |
|
court, and the success of this program has led to a reduction in |
|
recidivism; and |
|
WHEREAS, Before his appointment to the court, Judge Board |
|
practiced as a litigator; he earned his bachelor's degree and his |
|
law degree from the University of Oklahoma, and he was admitted to |
|
the State Bar of Texas in 1988; he has also been admitted to |
|
practice in Oklahoma and before the Oklahoma Western District |
|
Court, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Texas Northern |
|
District Court; and |
|
WHEREAS, A leader in his field, Judge Board is a past member |
|
of the board of directors of the Texas Center for the Judiciary, |
|
where he helped promote judicial excellence and professionalism; in |
|
April 2014, he was honored by the State Bar of Texas for his |
|
contributions to the legal profession; and |
|
WHEREAS, John Board's dedication, integrity, and commitment |
|
to the law have greatly benefited the work of the 181st Judicial |
|
District and earned him the respect and admiration of his peers, and |
|
he may indeed reflect with pride on his service as he embarks on the |
|
next exciting chapter of his life; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate John Board on his retirement as |
|
judge of the 181st Judicial District and extend to him sincere best |
|
wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Judge Board as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
