R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Rose Brooks of San Marcos celebrated her 90th
  birthday on August 18, 2023, to the great delight of her family and
  friends; and
         WHEREAS, Born in the rural community of Redwood in 1933, the
  former Rose Lee Kirk is the daughter of Clint and Sophronia Kirk;
  she grew up with six siblings, Clint, Wilbert, Wallace, Roy, Earl,
  and Linda; when she was eight, her parents moved from their farm to
  San Marcos in order to provide the children with a better education;
  she attended what was known as San Marcos Colored School during
  segregation and went on to become her family's first college
  graduate; working her way through Huston-Tillotson University, she
  earned a bachelor's degree in business; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Brooks taught at People's Business College
  before embarking on a career in social services, initially with
  Community Action, an agency created as part of President Lyndon
  Baines Johnson's War on Poverty; as an outreach worker, she
  connected people in need with important resources; later, she
  joined Gary Job Corps Center and battled gender discrimination in
  order to become a supervisor; she retired in 2000, following more
  than three decades of service; over the years, she has further
  benefited her fellow citizens as a member of the housing board and
  various municipal committees, as well as such organizations as the
  NAACP, the Women's Political Caucus, and the San Marcos Education
  Foundation; she has also been very active in the Democratic Party,
  serving as a precinct chair and delegate to state and national
  conventions; a strong champion of education, she established a
  scholarship program that has flourished for nearly a half century,
  supported by a popular Juneteenth cake auction; her many honors
  include the San Marcos Community Senior Citizen Volunteer Award;
  and
         WHEREAS, Having reached a significant milestone, this
  admired matriarch may indeed reflect with pride on her many
  accomplishments and wide-ranging contributions to her community;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
  Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Rose Brooks on
  the joyous occasion of her 90th birthday and extend to her sincere
  best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mrs. Brooks as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
