R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Maverick Boys & Girls Club of Amarillo is |
|
celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2024; and |
|
WHEREAS, The organization traces its origins to 1934, when |
|
Chanslor E. Weymouth, Cal Farley, and Roy Pool established the |
|
Maverick Boys Club at a building donated by Mary E. Bivins; from |
|
1934 through 1982, the facility was supervised by director Ralph |
|
Dykeman, and in 1983, it opened its doors to girls for the first |
|
time; today the club serves more than 1,000 young people every year, |
|
equipping at-risk youth with the tools they need to reach their full |
|
potential and to become engaged and productive members of society; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Since 1952, the club has operated from the Maverick |
|
building on South Lincoln Street; working in partnership with the |
|
United Way of Amarillo & Canyon and other organizations, it |
|
provides programs in the areas of character and leadership, |
|
education and career, health and life skills, the arts, and sports, |
|
fitness, and recreation; the club's offerings also include computer |
|
science, peer support, scouting, and 4-H initiatives; and |
|
WHEREAS, Throughout its rich history, the Maverick Boys & |
|
Girls Club of Amarillo has remained faithful to its mission of |
|
providing young Texans with a safe and nurturing environment in |
|
which to build healthy relationships, confidence, and self-esteem, |
|
and it is a pleasure to join in recognizing the organization on this |
|
notable milestone; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 90th |
|
anniversary of the Maverick Boys & Girls Club of Amarillo and extend |
|
to all those associated with the organization sincere best wishes |
|
for continued success with their important work; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the club as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
