A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to the eligibility for free prekindergarten programs in |
|
public schools of certain children who are eligible for the |
|
subsidized child-care program administered by the Texas Workforce |
|
Commission. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Section 29.153, Education Code, is amended by |
|
adding Subsection (b-1) to read as follows: |
|
(b-1) Notwithstanding Subsection (b), any child who is at |
|
least three years of age is eligible for enrollment in a |
|
prekindergarten class under this section if: |
|
(1) the class is provided through a partnership |
|
between a school district or open-enrollment charter school and a |
|
community-based child-care provider described by Subsection (g); |
|
and |
|
(2) the child is eligible for subsidized child-care |
|
services provided through the child-care services program |
|
administered by the Texas Workforce Commission. |
|
SECTION 2. Section 29.153(b-1), Education Code, as added by |
|
this Act, applies beginning with the 2023-2024 school year. |
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
