A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to the use of political contributions to settle a civil |
|
|
action. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Section 253.035, Election Code, is amended by |
|
|
adding Subsection (c-1) to read as follows: |
|
|
(c-1) The prohibition prescribed by Subsection (a) includes |
|
|
the personal use of political contributions accepted by a person as |
|
|
a candidate or officeholder or by a specific-purpose committee for |
|
|
the purpose of supporting the person as a candidate or assisting the |
|
|
person as an officeholder to settle a civil action asserting a claim |
|
|
against the officeholder. |
|
|
SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only |
|
|
to the use of a political contribution that occurs on or after the |
|
|
effective date of this Act. The use of a political contribution |
|
|
that occurs before the effective date of this Act is governed by the |
|
|
law in effect on the date the use occurred, and the former law is |
|
|
continued in effect for that purpose. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
