CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
|
|
WHEREAS, Almost a century ago, the City of Mansfield was the |
|
birthplace of Best Maid Products, and the company's subsequent |
|
success as a manufacturer of pickles has inspired area residents to |
|
make the vinegary vegetable the centerpiece of a beloved annual |
|
celebration; and |
|
WHEREAS, Best Maid pickles originated in the kitchen of |
|
Mildred and Jessie Otis Dalton, who lived in a small stone house in |
|
Mansfield; Mrs. Dalton's homemade pies, mayonnaise, sandwich |
|
spread, and pickles were popular with the customers in her |
|
husband's grocery, and in 1926, they founded the Best Maid company; |
|
the brand went on to be enormously successful, and today it is best |
|
known for its pickles and dressings; it processes 50 to 60 million |
|
pounds of cucumbers every year and sells 100 different items under |
|
the Best Maid and Del-Dixi brands; and |
|
WHEREAS, Since 2012, Mansfield has celebrated its fame as the |
|
birthplace of this pickle empire by staging the World's Only |
|
St. Paddy's Pickle Parade and Palooza every March, to coincide with |
|
St. Patrick's Day; this festive event has grown to attract tens of |
|
thousands of visitors each year, and it features a parade, retail |
|
and food vendors, musical performances, and three fun runs, as well |
|
as pickle-eating and pickle-juice-drinking competitions; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Pickle Parade and Palooza highlights the |
|
community's hometown pride and its healthy sense of fun, and the |
|
citizens of Mansfield may indeed savor their association with this |
|
iconic Texas treasure; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|
hereby redesignate Mansfield as the official Pickle Capital of |
|
Texas; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |
|
391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
|
until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally |
|
passed by the legislature. |
