R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to |
|
a close with the passing of Carl Martin Holmes of Duncanville on |
|
January 2, 2023, at the age of 89; and |
|
WHEREAS, The son of George and Minnie Holmes, Carl Holmes was |
|
born in Meherrin, Virginia, on September 27, 1933; he graduated |
|
from Lunenburg High School and Virginia Union University; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1954, Mr. Holmes embarked on a distinguished |
|
24-year career with the U.S. Army; he completed two tours in the |
|
Vietnam War, fighting with the 4th Infantry Division and the 1st |
|
Signal Brigade; a graduate of the Sergeants Major Academy at Fort |
|
Bliss, he rose to the rank of command sergeant major, serving at |
|
military installations across the U.S., Europe, and Southeast Asia; |
|
ultimately, he was assigned to Fort Gordon, Georgia, as battalion |
|
sergeant major, brigade sergeant major, and acting post sergeant |
|
major; his awards included two Bronze Star Medals, the Meritorious |
|
Service Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry; and |
|
WHEREAS, Following his military retirement in 1978, |
|
Mr. Holmes moved to Houston, where he joined the city's Department |
|
of Aviation; initially serving as general manager of William P. |
|
Hobby Airport, he was subsequently promoted to deputy director of |
|
the Houston Airport System and oversaw operations for the George |
|
Bush Intercontinental, William P. Hobby, and Ellington Airports; he |
|
retired in 2002; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Holmes shared 65 years with his beloved wife, |
|
Ellen, and he took great pride in their children, Carl and Melissa, |
|
and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren; in his leisure |
|
time, he enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and boating; he attended |
|
the Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in DeSoto, and he supported many |
|
charities, including Disabled American Veterans; and |
|
WHEREAS, While the death of Carl Martin Holmes brings great |
|
sadness to his family and friends, he leaves behind a legacy that |
|
will long be treasured by those who held him dear; now, therefore, |
|
be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Carl Martin Holmes |
|
and extend deepest condolences to all who mourn his passing; and, be |
|
it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Carl |
|
Holmes. |
