R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Legendary quarterback Tom Brady announced his |
|
|
retirement on February 1, 2023, concluding an illustrious |
|
|
professional football career that spanned 23 seasons; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Widely regarded as the greatest quarterback of all |
|
|
time, Mr. Brady is the National Football League's all-time leader |
|
|
in passing yards, touchdown throws, and Pro Bowl selections; chosen |
|
|
as the league's Most Valuable Player on 3 occasions, he has won a |
|
|
record 7 Super Bowl rings in 10 overall appearances; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. was born on |
|
|
August 3, 1977, in San Mateo, California; a star baseball and |
|
|
football player in high school, he was selected by the Montreal |
|
|
Expos in the 1995 Major League Baseball Draft but instead opted to |
|
|
play football at the University of Michigan; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In 2000, the New England Patriots famously waited |
|
|
until the sixth round of the NFL Draft to select Mr. Brady; after |
|
|
appearing in just one game during his rookie year, he took over as |
|
|
the starter for the Patriots in game two of the 2001 season, and his |
|
|
steady hand helped the team upset the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl |
|
|
XXXVI; he led New England to championships in 2004 and 2005, and |
|
|
during the 2007-2008 campaign, he threw 50 touchdown passes as the |
|
|
Patriots recorded the first 16-0 regular season record in league |
|
|
history and went on to play for the title; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Under Mr. Brady's guidance, the Patriots returned |
|
|
to the Super Bowl five times between 2012 and 2019, capturing the |
|
|
title in 2015, 2017, and 2019; after joining the Tampa Bay |
|
|
Buccaneers, he tacked on a seventh championship in 2021 at the age |
|
|
of 43, becoming the oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Brady is also renowned for his philanthropic |
|
|
work; he is a longtime supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, |
|
|
and he has raised over $46 million for Best Buddies International, a |
|
|
global organization that supports people with disabilities; |
|
|
moreover, he is a cofounder of the TB12 Foundation, which helps |
|
|
at-risk athletes receive the care they need; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Tom Brady has earned a special place in the pantheon |
|
|
of sports legends, and his myriad achievements on and off the field |
|
|
will continue to inspire football fans for many years to come; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby honor Tom Brady for his NFL career and his civic |
|
|
engagement and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; |
|
|
and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Mr. Brady as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
