R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, In an impressive display of skill and determination, |
|
Texas resident Scottie Scheffler captured the 86th Masters |
|
Tournament golf championship on April 10, 2022; and |
|
WHEREAS, Entering as the No. 1 player in the FedExCup and |
|
Official World Golf Rankings after winning three of his previous |
|
five tournaments, Mr. Scheffler joined the world's best golfers at |
|
Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia; following a first-round |
|
3-under 69, he overcame two bogeys with four birdies on the back |
|
nine; by the second day of the tournament, he was the leader after |
|
36 holes; in the next round, he fired a 71 for a 3-stroke advantage |
|
heading into the final round; and |
|
WHEREAS, With the coveted green jacket on the line, |
|
Mr. Scheffler demonstrated remarkable composure under pressure; |
|
his short game allowed him to grind out crucial par saves, and he |
|
reeled in four birdies, ultimately carding a total score of |
|
10-under-par 278 to become Masters champion; he closed out a |
|
storybook year by finishing in a tie for second in the FedExCup |
|
standings and receiving the Jack Nicklaus Award given to the PGA |
|
Tour Player of the Year; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in New Jersey, Mr. Scheffler moved with his |
|
family to Dallas at the age of six; as a youth, he won 75 times on |
|
the Northern Texas PGA Junior circuit and went on to even more |
|
success in American Junior Golf Association events, culminating in |
|
2013 Player of the Year honors; at Highland Park High School, he |
|
matched a state record with three straight individual state titles |
|
and was named the top-ranked junior golfer in the country; and |
|
WHEREAS, This accomplished athlete went on to attend The |
|
University of Texas at Austin, where he won the Phil Mickelson Award |
|
as the nation's top freshman and was a three-time All-American; |
|
after earning a finance degree from the McCombs School of Business, |
|
he turned pro in 2018; the following year, he secured fully exempt |
|
PGA Tour status for the 2019-2020 season and ended his rookie season |
|
ranked fifth in the FedExCup standings; in 2021, he recorded eight |
|
top-10 finishes on the tour; and |
|
WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Scheffler benefits from |
|
the love and support of his wife, Meredith, his parents, Scott and |
|
Diane Scheffler, and his sisters, Callie, Sara, and Molly; and |
|
WHEREAS, With his spectacular performance at the 2022 |
|
Masters, Scottie Scheffler has proven himself one of the premier |
|
competitors in pro golf, and he is indeed deserving of recognition |
|
for his outstanding accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Scottie Scheffler on winning the |
|
2022 Masters Tournament and extend to him sincere best wishes for |
|
continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Scheffler as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
