R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Houston Independent School District is marking |
|
the 100th anniversary of its founding in 2023; and |
|
WHEREAS, A free secondary school system was created in the |
|
area in 1877, and it became the Houston Independent School District |
|
in 1923; the district expanded its reach four years later, founding |
|
a community college which subsequently became the University of |
|
Houston; it also established one of the nation's first high schools |
|
for health professions; and |
|
WHEREAS, Today, Houston ISD serves nearly 190,000 students at |
|
274 campuses; it is the largest school district in Texas and the |
|
eighth largest in the nation, and it has taken in students from |
|
other areas over the years, including those displaced by Hurricane |
|
Katrina; the district offers 128 magnet programs focused on |
|
science, college and career, fine arts, and language immersion; in |
|
recognition of its substantial gains in student achievement, it won |
|
the Broad Prize for Urban Education in 2002 and 2013; and |
|
WHEREAS, Houston ISD benefits from the able leadership of its |
|
board of directors and its current superintendent, Dr. Rod Paige; |
|
with 27,000 employees, the district is one of the largest employers |
|
in Houston; and |
|
WHEREAS, For the past century, Houston ISD has provided |
|
generations of young Texans with a strong foundation on which to |
|
build, and it is indeed a privilege to join in marking this |
|
important milestone in its rich history; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Houston |
|
Independent School District and extend to all those associated with |
|
the district sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Houston ISD as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
