R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A delegation from Laredo is traveling to |
|
Macharaviaya, Spain, for the community's 2023 Fourth of July |
|
celebration in honor of its native son, Spanish military leader and |
|
American Revolutionary War hero Bernardo de Gálvez; and |
|
WHEREAS, Located in the province of Málaga, Macharaviaya was |
|
officially founded in 1572, though the local church was built in |
|
1505 and recognized by King Fernando in 1510; the town was home to |
|
the famous poet Salvador Rueda as well as the influential Gálvez |
|
family; and |
|
WHEREAS, With a current population of approximately 400 |
|
residents, Macharaviaya is a charming town with cobblestone streets |
|
and whitewashed, stone-wall houses; its focal point is the Iglesia |
|
de San Jacinto, built on the site of the original parish church; and |
|
WHEREAS, The city hosts an annual Fourth of July celebration |
|
to recognize its hometown hero, Bernardo de Gálvez, and his |
|
contributions to U.S. history; an honorary citizen of the United |
|
States, Mr. Gálvez supported the American Revolutionary War effort |
|
by providing supplies and intelligence to American forces and |
|
defeating the British in five military campaigns on U.S. soil; as |
|
part of the festivities, Macharaviaya hosts a parade and a |
|
reenactment of the capture of Fort George in Pensacola, which was a |
|
crucial victory in the Revolutionary War; and |
|
WHEREAS, As the birthplace of Bernardo de Gálvez, |
|
Macharaviaya played a noteworthy role in the campaign for American |
|
independence, and its citizens may take great pride in the town's |
|
rich history; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize Macharaviaya on the occasion of its |
|
2023 Fourth of July celebration and extend to all those associated |
|
with the community sincere best wishes for the future. |
