R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Proud residents of Van Zandt County are gathering on |
|
|
March 25, 2023, to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the county's |
|
|
founding; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Located in the northeast region of Texas, the |
|
|
territory of Van Zandt County has been occupied continuously for |
|
|
more than 10,000 years, and its rugged beauty is complemented by the |
|
|
Sabine and Neches Rivers; the eastern part of the county is in the |
|
|
Post Oak Savannah vegetation area with tall grasses and post and |
|
|
blackjack oak trees while the western part is in the Blackland |
|
|
Prairies region with tall grasses and mesquite, oak, pecan, and elm |
|
|
trees; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Established by the Texas Legislature on March 20, |
|
|
1848, the county was named for Isaac Van Zandt, a lawyer who served |
|
|
as a legislator and diplomat for the Republic of Texas; Canton, the |
|
|
county seat, was laid out in 1850 and incorporated in 1919; other |
|
|
notable communities include Ben Wheeler, Edgewood, Edom, |
|
|
Fruitvale, Grand Saline, Martin's Mill, Van, and Wills Point; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Major events in the county include the Van Zandt |
|
|
County Fair and Rodeo, the Grand Saline Salt Festival, the Van Oil |
|
|
Pageant and Festival, the Edgewood Heritage Festival, the Western |
|
|
Swing Valentine Party in Canton, and the Edom Art Festival; for the |
|
|
outdoor enthusiast, the Neches and Sabine Rivers, Purtis Creek |
|
|
State Park, and Lake Tawakoni State Park offer fine opportunities |
|
|
for fishing, boating, swimming, camping, and hiking; the county |
|
|
prospers thanks to agriculture, oil and gas, and recreational |
|
|
opportunities, and the region is a major producer of salt, hay, |
|
|
cotton, corn, and sweet potatoes, in addition to cattle, hogs, |
|
|
poultry, and dairy products; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The people of Van Zandt County share a rich and |
|
|
colorful heritage, and they may indeed take great pride in their |
|
|
home as they celebrate this milestone anniversary; now, therefore, |
|
|
be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 175th anniversary of Van Zandt |
|
|
County and extend to its citizens sincere best wishes for the |
|
|
future. |
