R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed physician drew to a close |
|
with the passing of Dr. Harmon Watson Kelley of San Antonio on |
|
January 26, 2023, at the age of 77; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Cameron on June 22, 1945, Harmon Kelley was |
|
the son of Harmon and Shirley Kelley; he grew up with four siblings, |
|
Constance, Danny, David, and Marvin, and he graduated as |
|
valedictorian of the Class of 1963 at O. J. Thomas High School; he |
|
was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army while studying at |
|
Prairie View A&M University, where he graduated cum laude, and he |
|
went on to earn his doctor of medicine degree from The University of |
|
Texas Medical Branch at Galveston; a member of the U.S. Army Medical |
|
Corps, he completed his obstetrics and gynecology residency at |
|
William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Kelley was subsequently stationed at Fort Hood |
|
in Killeen, serving as chief of the obstetrics and gynecology |
|
department at the Darnall Army Medical Center; in 1978, he moved to |
|
San Antonio and founded Southeast OB-GYN Associates, P.A., where he |
|
practiced for 44 years; in other tenures, he served as chief of |
|
staff of the former Southeast Baptist Hospital and chair of the |
|
OB/GYN Department for the Baptist Health System; and |
|
WHEREAS, Widely respected, Dr. Kelley received the Ashbel |
|
Smith Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor bestowed by the |
|
UTMB School of Medicine Alumni Association; he also garnered the |
|
Baptist Health System W. B. Russ Lifetime Achievement Award and the |
|
prestigious Golden Aesculapius Award from the Bexar County Medical |
|
Society; in 2004, Dr. Harmon W. Kelley Elementary School in San |
|
Antonio was established in his honor; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Kelley enjoyed the love and support of his wife |
|
of 53 years, Harriet, and he took great pride in their two |
|
daughters, Margaret and Jennifer; and |
|
WHEREAS, Deeply devoted to his family and his community, |
|
Dr. Harmon Kelley made a meaningful difference in the lives of his |
|
patients and fellow citizens, and his contributions will resonate |
|
for years to come; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Harmon Watson |
|
Kelley and extend heartfelt condolences to the members of his |
|
family: to his wife, Harriet O'Banion Kelley; to his daughters, |
|
Dr. Margaret A. Kelley and Jennifer R. Kelley; to his sister, |
|
Constance Ward; to his brothers, Dr. Danny Kelley and his wife, |
|
Dr. Janice Kelley, and David Kelley and his wife, Karen Kelley; to |
|
his brother-in-law, Charles H. O'Banion, Esq.; and to all others |
|
who mourn his passing; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Harmon |
|
Kelley. |
