R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their |
|
memories of Celestino Mendez Jr., who died on May 8, 2022, at the |
|
age of 91; and |
|
WHEREAS, Celestino Mendez was born in San Marcos on |
|
September 10, 1930, to Celestino Mendez Sr. and Amalia Mendez, and |
|
he grew up with five siblings, Ruth, Servando, Cecilia, Alicia, and |
|
Helen; and |
|
WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Mendez |
|
served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War; in civilian |
|
life, he committed himself to serving his beloved San Marcos |
|
community, promoting education and fighting for equal rights and |
|
equal opportunities for minorities; in the mid-1960s, he was |
|
president of the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School |
|
District board, and he was a founding board member of Centro |
|
Cultural Hispano de San Marcos; he remained dedicated to his fellow |
|
veterans as a lifelong member of the American GI Forum, which he |
|
served for many years as commander; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Mendez shared a rewarding marriage with his |
|
wife, Monica, and he was a loving father to his daughters, Monique |
|
and Rose, his stepson, Andrew, and his son, the late Jeffrey Wayne |
|
Mendez; and |
|
WHEREAS, A devoted family man, a respected community leader, |
|
and a proud veteran, Celestino Mendez lived a full and generous life |
|
devoted to the service of others, and he leaves behind a legacy that |
|
will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Celestino |
|
Mendez Jr. and extend sincere condolences to the members of his |
|
family: to his wife, Monica Mendez; to his daughters, Monique |
|
Mendez and Rose Mendez Segrave and her husband, Brian; to his |
|
stepson, Andrew Mendez, and his wife, Alejandra; to his former |
|
wife, Elida Simmons; to his sister, Ruth Mendez Rosales; and to his |
|
other relatives and many friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Celestino |
|
Mendez. |
