R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams was named the seventh |
|
president of the University of North Texas Health Science Center at |
|
Fort Worth on September 12, 2022, and with that appointment, she |
|
became the first Black woman to lead a health science center in the |
|
State of Texas; and |
|
WHEREAS, A trailblazer throughout her career, |
|
Dr. Trent-Adams began her work in public health when she joined the |
|
United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps in 1992; she |
|
went on to become the first Black woman to serve the organization as |
|
deputy surgeon general, and she later retired at the rank of rear |
|
admiral upper half in 2020; and |
|
WHEREAS, As the U.S. deputy surgeon general from 2015 to |
|
2018, she was a trusted advisor to the surgeon general on a variety |
|
of critical issues, including federal efforts to combat the opioid |
|
crisis; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Trent-Adams received her bachelor's degree in |
|
nursing from Hampton University and both her master's degree in |
|
nursing and health policy and her doctorate in public policy from |
|
the University of Maryland; through her outstanding work as a |
|
nurse-researcher, she earned the Florence Nightingale Medal from |
|
the International Committee of the Red Cross, the highest |
|
international honor bestowed upon a nursing professional; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams has demonstrated a |
|
longstanding commitment to research, education, patient care, and |
|
public service, and she may indeed reflect with pride on all that |
|
she has achieved as she takes on the challenges of her new role; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commend Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams on her |
|
appointment as president of the University of North Texas Health |
|
Science Center at Fort Worth and extend to her sincere best wishes |
|
for a successful and productive tenure; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Dr. Trent-Adams as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
