R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Tyler community lost an esteemed resident with |
|
the death of John Sims on March 31, 2023, at the age of 70; and |
|
WHEREAS, John Sims was born on July 18, 1952, in |
|
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; he grew up with two sisters, and during |
|
his youth, his father called radio play-by-play for the |
|
Philadelphia Phillies; and |
|
WHEREAS, A graduate of Temple University, Mr. Sims embarked |
|
on a successful career in radio that spanned more than four and a |
|
half decades; he worked in East Texas for 43 years, serving as an |
|
on-air personality at KDOK before joining KTBB in Tyler, where he |
|
became a news anchor and editor in 1998; in the course of his |
|
tenure, he gained recognition by thousands of listeners for his |
|
distinctive voice; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Sims gave freely of his time and talents for the |
|
betterment of his community; he was president of Leadership Tyler |
|
and the Smith County Community Partnership Council, and he served |
|
as chair of the Tyler Together Race Relations Forum; moreover, he |
|
was active with such groups as the League of Women Voters, March of |
|
Dimes, and East Texas Wheelers and Walkers; and |
|
WHEREAS, John Sims earned the admiration of all who knew him, |
|
not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his |
|
exceptional kindness and generosity, and he leaves behind a legacy |
|
that will resonate in the Tyler community for years to come; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of John Sims and extend |
|
sincere condolences to his nephew, Tom Stokes, and to all others who |
|
mourn his passing; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John Sims. |
