R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Honorable Hilda Gloria Tagle retired as senior |
|
judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas |
|
in 2021, drawing to a close a pioneering career in the law that |
|
spanned more than four decades; and |
|
WHEREAS, The daughter of Manuel and Dolores Cipriano Tagle, |
|
Hilda Tagle was born in Corpus Christi in 1946 and grew up in |
|
Robstown; she earned her associate's degree from Del Mar College in |
|
1967, her bachelor's degree from East Texas State University in |
|
1969, and her master's degree in library science from North Texas |
|
State University in 1971; and |
|
WHEREAS, While working as a librarian at Strake Jesuit |
|
College Preparatory School in Houston, Judge Tagle enrolled in The |
|
University of Texas School of Law, and she graduated in 1977; she |
|
began her legal career as an assistant city attorney in Corpus |
|
Christi and as an assistant county attorney in Nueces County, and in |
|
1980 she was recruited by the Nueces County district attorney to |
|
prosecute felonies; she then entered private practice for a time, |
|
while also teaching at Del Mar College; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1985, Judge Tagle was appointed to Nueces County |
|
Court at Law No. 3, making her the first Hispanic woman to serve as |
|
a judge in Nueces County, the first Hispanic woman to serve on a |
|
county court at law in Texas, and the second Hispanic woman to serve |
|
as judge of a court of record in the history of Texas; she was |
|
elected judge of the 148th District Court in Corpus Christi in 1994, |
|
and in 1997 she was nominated by President Bill Clinton to the U.S. |
|
District Court; confirmed by the U.S. Senate the following year, |
|
she became the first Hispanic woman to serve as a U.S. District |
|
Court judge in Texas, and on December 31, 2012, she became the |
|
court's senior judge; and |
|
WHEREAS, Judge Tagle's dedication, expertise, and commitment |
|
to the law have greatly benefited the citizens of Texas and earned |
|
her the respect and admiration of her fellow jurists, and she may |
|
indeed reflect with pride on a career well spent as she embarks on |
|
the next exciting chapter of her life; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Hilda Gloria Tagle on her |
|
retirement as senior judge of the U.S. District Court for the |
|
Southern District of Texas and extend to her sincere best wishes for |
|
the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Judge Tagle as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
