R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson is concluding her |
|
tenure as president of Texas A&M University-San Antonio on January |
|
16, 2023, drawing to a close more than seven years of exemplary |
|
service to the institution; and |
|
WHEREAS, The second president in the school's history, |
|
Dr. Teniente-Matson took the helm of A&M-San Antonio in 2015 and |
|
has guided the university through a period of tremendous growth; |
|
during her tenure, enrollment has risen from approximately 4,500 |
|
students to more than 7,300, and the campus has established the Mays |
|
Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement, the |
|
Cisneros Institute for Emerging Leaders, the Institute of Water |
|
Resource Science and Technology, the Cyber Engineering |
|
Technology/Cyber Security Research Center, and the Institute for |
|
Autism and Related Disorders, among a number of other programs and |
|
initiatives; moreover, under her direction, the university |
|
achieved the U.S. Department of Education Hispanic Serving |
|
Institution designation in 2016 and received the Seal of Excelencia |
|
certification in 2021; and |
|
WHEREAS, In addition to fulfilling her many professional |
|
responsibilities, Dr. Teniente-Matson is chair of the American |
|
Association of State Colleges and Universities and serves on the |
|
national board of Girl Scouts of the USA; she is also a member of the |
|
TIAA Inclusion and Diversity Council and the City of San Antonio |
|
Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women; her numerous honors |
|
include the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership 2020 |
|
U.S.-Japan Public Intellectual award, the Making a Mark on the |
|
World Innovation Award from the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of |
|
Commerce, and a Top 10 Professional Woman of the Year Award from the |
|
Marjaree Mason Center; and |
|
WHEREAS, A native of San Antonio, Dr. Teniente-Matson is a |
|
graduate of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University |
|
of Alaska Anchorage and holds a doctorate in educational leadership |
|
from California State University, Fresno; in all her endeavors, she |
|
enjoys the love and support of her husband, Mike, and their two |
|
sons, Phillip and Wyatt; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through her visionary leadership, Cynthia |
|
Teniente-Matson has played a vital role in advancing the mission of |
|
Texas A&M University-San Antonio, and her achievements will |
|
continue to be appreciated for years to come; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature |
|
hereby honor Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson for her dedicated service |
|
as president of Texas A&M University-San Antonio and extend to her |
|
sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Dr. Teniente-Matson as an expression of high regard by |
|
the Texas Senate. |
