No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
The bill amends the Education Code to expand an existing tuition and fee exemption, currently available to peace officers, to be available to correctional officers and jailers employed by the state or a political subdivision of the state. It is assumed that any general revenue costs associated with the bill could be absorbed using existing resources. The Higher Education Coordinating Board estimates that the impacts on institutions in the form of foregone revenue would be approximately $3,472,365 for fiscal year 2024 and would increase each year based on projected enrollment growth and tuition increases. The majority of this tuition is designated tuition, which is classified as institutional funds, and is not appropriated to the institutions in the General Appropriations Act
