Honorable Bryan Hughes, Chair, Senate Committee on State Affairs
FROM:
Jerry McGinty, Director, Legislative Budget Board
IN RE:
SB1281 by Hughes (Relating to prohibiting the denial of a driver's license renewal for failure to appear in court, failure to pay a fine or cost, or failure to satisfy a judgment.), As Introduced
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
It is assumed that any costs associated with the bill could be absorbed using existing resources.
Local Government Impact
The bill would repeal Chapter 706 of the Transportation Code regarding the denial of a driver's license for failure to appear in court. The statute allows a local municipality to impose a $10 reimbursement fee for each complaint or citation and deposit the revenue to the credit of the general fund of the municipality.
The fiscal implications to local municipalities cannot be determined at this time due to the amount of revenue collected by municipalities from the reimbursement fee being unknown.
