A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to a halal food option for breakfast and lunch programs |
|
|
provided by certain public schools. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 33, Education Code, is |
|
|
amended by adding Section 33.911 to read as follows: |
|
|
Sec. 33.911. HALAL BREAKFAST AND LUNCH OPTION. (a) In this |
|
|
section, "halal" has the meaning assigned by Section 17.881, |
|
|
Business & Commerce Code. |
|
|
(b) This section applies only to a school district or |
|
|
open-enrollment charter school that is wholly or partly located in |
|
|
a county: |
|
|
(1) with a population of 2.1 million or more; or |
|
|
(2) that is adjacent to a county described by |
|
|
Subdivision (1). |
|
|
(c) On request by a student or the parent or person standing |
|
|
in parental relation to the student, a school district or |
|
|
open-enrollment charter school to which this section applies shall |
|
|
provide a halal option to the student for any breakfast or lunch |
|
|
program provided by the district or school. |
|
|
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2025-2026 |
|
|
school year. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
