CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
         WHEREAS, The Muslim American residents of Texas have
  benefited our state in countless ways over the course of many
  decades, and their achievements are indeed deserving of
  recognition; and
         WHEREAS, The state with the fifth largest Muslim population
  in the nation, Texas is home to an estimated 500,000 people who
  practice Islam, with the majority of those residents living in the
  cities of Houston and Dallas; moreover, Texas has the largest
  Muslim population in the southern U.S., and more than 330 mosques
  and Islamic centers are located in the state; and
         WHEREAS, Countless members of Texas' Muslim American
  community have devoted their lives to service, extending support
  and assistance to individuals across the state through charitable
  donations and civic organizations; and
         WHEREAS, The Muslim community fosters compassion and peace
  through the tenets of Islam, which include zakat (giving) as an
  obligatory religious practice; and
         WHEREAS, Muslim Americans in Texas have distinguished
  themselves in a broad range of endeavors, including as medical
  professionals, first responders, and teachers who have
  demonstrated an exceptional commitment to serving their fellow
  residents; in addition, Muslims have had an important influence in
  business, politics, technology, the arts, and numerous other
  fields; and
         WHEREAS, The Muslim American community is an integral part of
  the Lone Star State's vibrant and diverse mix of cultures, and the
  observance of Muslim Heritage Month offers a welcome opportunity to
  celebrate the meaningful contributions of its members; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
  hereby designate May as Muslim Heritage Month; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
  391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
  until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
  passed by the legislature.
