CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
|
|
WHEREAS, The Muslim American residents of Texas have |
|
benefited our state in countless ways over the course of many |
|
decades, and their achievements are indeed deserving of |
|
recognition; and |
|
WHEREAS, The state with the fifth largest Muslim population |
|
in the nation, Texas is home to an estimated 500,000 people who |
|
practice Islam, with the majority of those residents living in the |
|
cities of Houston and Dallas; moreover, Texas has the largest |
|
Muslim population in the southern U.S., and more than 330 mosques |
|
and Islamic centers are located in the state; and |
|
WHEREAS, Countless members of Texas' Muslim American |
|
community have devoted their lives to service, extending support |
|
and assistance to individuals across the state through charitable |
|
donations and civic organizations; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Muslim community fosters compassion and peace |
|
through the tenets of Islam, which include zakat (giving) as an |
|
obligatory religious practice; and |
|
WHEREAS, Muslim Americans in Texas have distinguished |
|
themselves in a broad range of endeavors, including as medical |
|
professionals, first responders, and teachers who have |
|
demonstrated an exceptional commitment to serving their fellow |
|
residents; in addition, Muslims have had an important influence in |
|
business, politics, technology, the arts, and numerous other |
|
fields; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Muslim American community is an integral part of |
|
the Lone Star State's vibrant and diverse mix of cultures, and the |
|
observance of Muslim Heritage Month offers a welcome opportunity to |
|
celebrate the meaningful contributions of its members; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|
hereby designate May as Muslim Heritage Month; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |
|
391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
|
until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally |
|
passed by the legislature. |
