CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
|
|
WHEREAS, Kathy Shannon retired as executive director of the |
|
Permian Basin Petroleum Museum in Midland on October 1, 2023, |
|
drawing to a close many years of outstanding service; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Shannon joined the Petroleum Museum as director |
|
of education in 1995, and in that role, she oversaw the addition of |
|
the organization's transportation wing, which uses Chaparral race |
|
cars to educate visitors on the scientific principles of |
|
aerodynamics and physics; in November 2004, she assumed her |
|
position as executive director; over the course of a tenure |
|
spanning nearly two decades, the museum opened an educational hall |
|
and a mineral gallery highlighting mineral specimens from across |
|
the globe, underwent an $18 million renovation of its petroleum |
|
exhibits, and launched its state-of-the-art STEAM education |
|
center; and |
|
WHEREAS, Over the years, Ms. Shannon has contributed to her |
|
profession as board president of the Texas Association of Museums |
|
from 2011 to 2012 and as a member of the Permian Basin Museum |
|
Association; in 2016, she was presented with the TAM President's |
|
Award; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Shannon has also given back to the greater |
|
community by serving on the board of the Trinity School of Midland |
|
and by collaborating with the Texas Education Agency on revising |
|
the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills test through the Texas |
|
Energy Council; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Petroleum Museum has benefited immeasurably |
|
from Kathy Shannon's leadership and her unwavering commitment to |
|
the institution's mission, and she may indeed reflect with pride on |
|
all that she has accomplished; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|
hereby congratulate Kathy Shannon on her retirement from the |
|
Permian Basin Petroleum Museum and extend to her sincere best |
|
wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Shannon as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives and Senate. |
