House Bill 1589 amends the Government Code to require the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to administer a polygraph examination to an applicant for a peace officer commission or a police communications operator position. The results of the examination are to be used as a factor in determining whether to commission an applicant as a peace officer or hire an applicant as a communications operator. The bill exempts an applicant who is currently commissioned by DPS as a peace officer or employed by DPS as a communications operator from the examination requirement. The bill sets out provisions for the administration of the polygraph examination, including confidentiality provisions.
