House Bill 2561 amends the Government Code to redefine "school year," for purposes of establishing service credit in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), as an exact 12‑month period beginning September 1 and ending August 31 of the next calendar year. The bill removes an alternate definition of "school year" that was previously applicable for a TRS member whose contract or work agreement begins after June 30 and continues after August 31 of the same calendar year and that specified a period of not more than 12 months beginning on the start date in the contract or agreement. The bill makes its provisions applicable beginning with the 2012-2013 school year.
