House Bill 3618 amends the Health and Safety Code to require the Department of State Health Services, in consultation with the Texas Education Agency, to adopt criteria for the development of a diabetes intervention pilot program for school districts that are located on the Texas-Mexico border and that have a population of less than 600,000. The bill requires the program to include certain components, provides for an evaluation of the program's effectiveness in the first year, and requires the department to distribute funds appropriated for that purpose to each school district that chooses to implement a pilot program. The bill also requires the department to employ a grant writer to help school districts in the Texas-Mexico border region obtain grants and other funds for school-based health centers and limits the funds to certain uses.
