H.B. No. 1138
    1-1 AN ACT
1-2 relating to the term of office of a municipal judge.
1-3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-4 SECTION 1. Section 29.005, Government Code, is amended to
    1-5 read as follows:
1-6 Sec. 29.005. Term of Office. The judge of a municipal court
1-7 serves for a term of office of two years unless the municipality
1-8 provides for a longer term pursuant to Article XI, Section 11, of
1-9 the Texas Constitution. A municipal court judge who is not
1-10 reappointed by the 91st day following the expiration of a term of
1-11 office shall, absent action by the appointing authority, continue
1-12 to serve for another term of office beginning on the date the
1-13 previous term of office expired.
1-14 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect January 1, 1994.
1-15 SECTION 3. The importance of this legislation and the
1-16 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
1-17 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
1-18 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
1-19 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,
1-20 and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its
1-21 passage, and it is so enacted.
