                                 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
    1-1 AN ACT
    1-2 relating to athletic trainers.
1-3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
    1-4 SECTION 1. Section 1(1), Chapter 498, Acts of the 62nd
    1-5 Legislature, Regular Session, 1971 (Article 4512d, Vernon's Texas
1-6 Civil Statutes), is amended to read as follows:
1-7 (1) "Athletic Trainer" means a person with specific
1-8 qualifications, as set forth in Section 9 of this Act, who, upon
1-9 the advice and consent of his team physician, carries out the
1-10 practice of prevention and/or physical rehabilitation of injuries
1-11 incurred by athletes or who, upon the advice and consent of the
1-12 medical director of the hospital-based sports medicine center at
1-13 which the athletic trainer practices, carries out the practice of
1-14 prevention and/or physical rehabilitation of injuries incurred by
1-15 athletes or nonathletes. To carry out these functions the Athletic
1-16 trainer is authorized to use physical modalities such as heat,
1-17 light, sound, cold, electricity, or mechanical devices related to
   1-18 rehabilitation and treatment.
1-19 SECTION 2. The importance of this legislation and the
1-20 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
1-21 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
1-22 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
1-23 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,
1-24 and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its
2-1 passage, and it is so enacted.
