By Smithee H.B. No. 2132 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-1 AN ACT 1-2 relating to the term of office of municipal judges. 1-3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-4 SECTION 1. Section 29.005, Government Code, is amended to 1-5 read as follows: 1-6 Sec. 29.005. Term of Office. The judge of a municipal court 1-7 serves for a term of office of two years unless the municipality 1-8 provides for a longer term pursuant to Article XI, Section 11, of 1-9 the Texas Constitution. A municipal court judge who is not 1-10 reappointed shall not continue to perform the duties of office 1-11 until the judge's successor is qualified for more than 90 days 1-12 after the expiration of the term. 1-13 SECTION 2. (a) This Act takes effect January 1, 1994. 1-14 SECTION 3. The importance of this legislation and the 1-15 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an 1-16 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the 1-17 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several 1-18 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended, 1-19 and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its 1-20 passage, and it is so enacted.
