                                 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
    1-1                                AN ACT
    1-2  relating to administrative leave for a commissioned officer of the
    1-3  Department of Public Safety who is injured in the line of duty.
    1-4        BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
    1-5        SECTION 1.  Subchapter A, Chapter 411, Government Code, is
    1-6  amended by adding Section 411.0161 to read as follows:
    1-7        Sec. 411.0161.  ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE FOR INJURED COMMISSIONED
    1-8  OFFICER.  (a)  An officer commissioned by the department who is
    1-9  injured in the line of duty is entitled to a maximum of 12 weeks'
   1-10  administrative leave with full pay and benefits for the time during
   1-11  which the officer is unable to perform the officer's duties because
   1-12  of the injury.
   1-13        (b)  The department may not require an officer to take annual
   1-14  leave, sick leave, temporary medical leave, or other leave or
   1-15  compensatory time before taking administrative leave under this
   1-16  section.
   1-17        SECTION 2.  The change in law made by this Act applies only
   1-18  to an injury suffered in the line of duty by a commissioned officer
   1-19  of the Department of Public Safety on or after the effective date
   1-20  of this Act.
   1-21        SECTION 3.  The importance of this legislation and the
   1-22  crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
   1-23  emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
   1-24  constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
    2-1  days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,
    2-2  and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its
    2-3  passage, and it is so enacted.
