                                 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
    1-1                                AN ACT
    1-2  relating to the amount of compensation that must be paid to certain
    1-3  county officers.
    1-4        BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
    1-5        SECTION 1.  Section 152.012, Local Government Code, is
    1-6  amended to read as follows:
    1-7        Sec. 152.012.  MINIMUM AMOUNT OF SALARY.  The commissioners
    1-8  court may not set the salary of:
    1-9              (1)  an officer or employee at an amount less than the
   1-10  amount of the salary in effect on January 1, 1972;
   1-11              (2)  <.  The court may not set the salary of> a justice
   1-12  of the peace at an amount less than the amount of the salary in
   1-13  effect on May 25, 1973;
   1-14              (3)  a district clerk at an amount less than 85 percent
   1-15  of the total annual salary paid to the lowest paid district judge
   1-16  in the county;
   1-17              (4)  a county clerk at an amount less than 85 percent
   1-18  of the total annual salary paid to the lowest paid county
   1-19  court-at-law judge in the county; or
   1-20              (5)  the county tax assessor-collector at an amount
   1-21  less than the total annual salary paid to the county auditor, if
   1-22  the county has a county auditor.
   1-23        SECTION 2.  This Act applies to compensation paid by a county
   1-24  beginning with the first county fiscal year that begins on or after
    2-1  the effective date of this Act.
    2-2        SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 1993.
    2-3        SECTION 4.  The importance of this legislation and the
    2-4  crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
    2-5  emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
    2-6  constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
    2-7  days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended.
