Chapter 142, Local Government Code, is amended by 1-26 adding Section 142.011 to read as follows: 1-27 Sec. 142.011. EDUCATIONAL LEAVE. (a) On written 1-28 application by a member of the police department, a municipality 1-29 may grant the person a leave of absence to enable the person to 1-30 enroll full-time in college to pursue a course of study related to 1-31 law enforcement or public safety. 1-32 (b) The person is entitled to continue receiving employee 1-33 benefits, including health and life insurance and accumulation of 1-34 retirement credit, while on leave under Subsection (a) if the 1-35 person pays both the person's and the municipality's share of the 1-36 cost of the benefits. 1-37 (c) On reinstatement, the person shall receive full 1-38 seniority credit for the time spent on leave under Subsection (a). 1-39 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 1993. 1-40 SECTION 3.
