No. 8 73R2393 RNS-D CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was a man of 1-2 unparalleled moral stature who devoted his life to the fight for 1-3 full citizenship rights of the poor, disadvantaged, and racially 1-4 oppressed of this society; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Dr. King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, 1-6 Georgia, and acquired an outstanding theological education, earning 1-7 a bachelor of divinity degree from Crozer Theological Seminary and 1-8 a doctorate in philosophy from Boston University; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Drawing inspiration from the life and teachings of 1-10 Mahatma Gandhi, he transformed a nation through his doctrine of 1-11 civil disobedience, which was epitomized in his brilliant "I have a 1-12 dream" speech, in which he "subpoenaed the conscience of the nation 1-13 before the judgment seat of morality"; and 1-14 WHEREAS, In January 1964, Time magazine named Dr. King "Man 1-15 of the Year," the first black American so honored, while later in 1-16 that year he became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace 1-17 Prize; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Early in 1968, he went to Memphis, Tennessee, to 1-19 assist striking sanitation workers, and on April 4 of that year he 1-20 was struck down by an assassin's bullet at the age of 39; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Dr. King's birthday was declared a federal holiday 1-22 in 1983, and an official holiday in the State of Texas in 1992, and 1-23 it is entirely fitting that the memory of this great American be 1-24 honored in local communities throughout the state; now, therefore, 2-1 be it 2-2 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas 2-3 hereby direct the Texas Transportation Commission to designate 2-4 Farm-to-Market Road 1765 in Galveston County, from Highway 45 to 2-5 Farm-to-Market Road 146, "Martin Luther King Memorial Highway" or 2-6 "MLK Highway"; and, be it further 2-7 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be forwarded to the 2-8 members of the Texas Transportation Commission as an official 2-9 expression of the will of the Texas Legislature.
