No. 25 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, Surrounded by family and friends, Marie Browan Green 1-2 marked the noteworthy occasion of her 90th birthday on November 19, 1-3 1992, at a party given in her honor by her loving children; and 1-4 WHEREAS, The oldest of three children, she was born in 1-5 Houston and attended public schools there until the age of 14, when 1-6 a tragic accident claimed the life of her father; she then left 1-7 school and went to work to help her mother, Mamie Farley Browan, 1-8 support Marie's two younger siblings, Francis and Helen, eventually 1-9 earning enough money to help send Francis to college; and 1-10 WHEREAS, This spirited young lady attended business school 1-11 and became proficient in shorthand and typing, thus enabling her to 1-12 secure a clerking job at the Federal Land Bank; she quickly 1-13 ascended to the rank of secretary and eventually headed a 1-14 department with her own staff; and 1-15 WHEREAS, While attending a party she met Howard P. Green, a 1-16 graduate of The University of Texas School of Law and an attorney 1-17 at the law firm where her mother worked as a secretary, and the two 1-18 were married in 1933; and 1-19 WHEREAS, The young couple moved to Mr. Green's hometown of 1-20 Cuero, where he went into practice with his father, John N. Green, 1-21 a former district judge who had also served in the house of 1-22 representatives during the 27th and 28th legislatures; and 1-23 WHEREAS, This devoted wife and mother dedicated much of the 2-1 next 10 years to raising her four children, while Mr. Green became 2-2 a rising star on the local political scene, successfully 2-3 campaigning for the post of district attorney and later, district 2-4 judge; and 2-5 WHEREAS, In addition to caring for her family and helping her 2-6 husband's campaigning, Mrs. Green contributed much of her time and 2-7 talent to church and community organizations; she was a devout 2-8 member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and at various times was 2-9 president of the Hawthorne Club, the University Club, and the Altar 2-10 Society; and 2-11 WHEREAS, In 1962, Mr. Green earned the honor of being named 2-12 chief justice of the court of civil appeals in Corpus Christi; he 2-13 honorably served in this post until he retired in 1971, but he was 2-14 soon called back into public service and asked to preside over some 2-15 lengthy cases in other parts of the state, eventually arriving in 2-16 Austin to assist the court of criminal appeals; and 2-17 WHEREAS, The Greens' temporary stay in Austin soon became a 2-18 permanent one, and Mrs. Green became as active in community service 2-19 and church groups in Austin as she had been in Cuero; her charm and 2-20 gracious personality won her many friends and admirers in Austin, 2-21 where she continues her involvement as a lay reader, a bingo 2-22 caller, and a volunteer at the "old folks" home; and 2-23 WHEREAS, Although Judge Green passed away in 1977, this 2-24 remarkable woman continues to enjoy the love and support of her 2-25 children and grandchildren; some of her family live in Austin, 3-1 including her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lee and Glen Shomaker, 3-2 and her daughter, Sarah Green, while her son John Green lives in 3-3 Houston and her daughter Phyllis Green Belk lives in Pennsylvania; 3-4 and 3-5 WHEREAS, This admirable woman has earned the love and respect 3-6 of all who know her for her dedication to her family and her 3-7 selfless commitment to community service; her strength and 3-8 compassion are an inspiration to all Texans, and she is indeed 3-9 worthy of special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it 3-10 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas 3-11 hereby extend sincere congratulations to Marie Browan Green on the 3-12 celebration of her 90th birthday and extend warmest best wishes for 3-13 continued success and happiness; and, be it further 3-14 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-15 prepared for Mrs. Green as an expression of high regard by the 3-16 Texas Legislature.
