                                 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The remarkable life of George Sessions Perry will be
    1-2  commemorated with a Texas Historical Marker in the city of Rockdale
    1-3  in honor of their native son; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Soon to be permanently installed downtown at the
    1-5  city library, the marker is temporarily on display in the Rockdale
    1-6  High School lobby; the marker was a project of Rockdale High School
    1-7  honors world history class of 1990-1991; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Teacher Mark Brady encouraged his class to pursue
    1-9  the project although it took over two years to complete the
   1-10  requirements; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, The students, some of whom now attend college,
   1-12  persevered in their goal to have a marker in memory of the renowned
   1-13  author and journalist; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, The son of Andrew and Laura Perry, George Sessions
   1-15  Perry was born on May 5, 1910; he married Claire Hodges in 1933 and
   1-16  published his first manuscript in 1937; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, A prolific writer, Mr. Perry wrote fiction and
   1-18  nonfiction stories and novels, many of which were based on the
   1-19  lives of the people he knew and events he experienced while growing
   1-20  up in Rockdale; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, During World War II the correspondent wrote
   1-22  first-hand accounts of the war for readers of the New Yorker and
   1-23  Saturday Evening-Post; his war book, Where Away, remains one of the
   1-24  most eloquent documents composed by war correspondents; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Before his death in 1956, George Sessions Perry had
    2-2  established himself as a master craftsman of nonfiction articles
    2-3  and as a gifted storyteller; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Recognized by his peers for his exceptional works,
    2-5  Mr. Perry was awarded the National Book Award in 1941 by the
    2-6  American Booksellers Association for his novel, Hold Autumn in Your
    2-7  Hand; the book also received the Texas Institute of Letters Award
    2-8  for the best Texas book in 1941 and was later filmed as The
    2-9  Southerner; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, The students of Rockdale High School are to be
   2-11  commended for their magnificent gift to the citizens of the city of
   2-12  Rockdale and the State of Texas; now, therefore, be it
   2-13        RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-14  hereby recognize the 1990-1991 honors world history class of
   2-15  Rockdale High School and their teacher, Mark Brady, for
   2-16  memorializing the life and works  of George Sessions Perry; and, be
   2-17  it further
   2-18        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-19  prepared for the esteemed group as an expression of highest regard
   2-20  by the Legislature of the State of Texas.
