H.C.R. No. 34 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, On March 2, 1993, at the annual banquet of the 1-2 Overton-New London Area Chamber of Commerce, Herbert Reinhold 1-3 Knauth officially will retire from his position as chamber manager, 1-4 drawing to a close an outstanding 32-year career of service and 1-5 dedication to his community; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Acting on behalf of the citizens of Overton and New 1-7 London, Mr. Knauth has worked tirelessly to promote the interests 1-8 of these two East Texas towns; today, at age 94, this respected 1-9 community leader is widely recognized and highly regarded as the 1-10 oldest active chamber manager in the United States; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The son of German immigrants, Frederick R. and 1-12 Amelia Knauth, Mr. Knauth learned at an early age the value of hard 1-13 work; growing up on a farm, he and his family worked many long 1-14 hours in the cotton fields, picking and separating the bolls by 1-15 hand; and 1-16 WHEREAS, After his graduation from Burkburnett High School, 1-17 Mr. Knauth entered the military and proudly served his country in 1-18 World War I; following his service, he attended both Texas A&M 1-19 University and The University of Texas at Austin; and 1-20 WHEREAS, In 1922, he accepted a position with an oil company 1-21 and six years later, in 1928, married the former Miss Bessie Lewis; 1-22 later, with the birth of their two children, Gregory and Elenor, 1-23 the happiness of this loving couple was made complete; and 1-24 WHEREAS, The lifetime achievements of this well-respected 2-1 gentleman testify to his remarkable personal character; as a 32nd 2-2 degree Mason and Shriner, and as a former president and 2-3 still-active member of the Rotary Club with more than 53 years of 2-4 perfect attendance, Mr. Knauth has dedicated many hours of loyal 2-5 service to his community and friends; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Deeply concerned for the future of this nation, 2-7 Mr. Knauth was a member of Kilgore Junior College's board of 2-8 trustees from 1960-1977, serving two terms in the position of 2-9 president; in addition, Mr. Knauth has long been actively involved 2-10 in the Boy Scouts of America, most recently achieving the Silver 2-11 Beaver award; and 2-12 WHEREAS, As a public official, Mr. Knauth maintains an 2-13 outstanding record of service; motivated by his strong sense of 2-14 loyalty and personal obligation to his fellow citizens and a 2-15 sincere desire to continually improve his community, this special 2-16 man has left a mark on the hearts of all who know him; though many 2-17 will aspire to follow in the footsteps of this inspiring 2-18 gentleman, few will match his long-lasting record of dedication and 2-19 commitment to the world around him; now, therefore, be it 2-20 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas 2-21 hereby honor Mr. Herbert Reinhold Knauth for his outstanding career 2-22 of service to his beloved community as manager of the Overton-New 2-23 London Area Chamber of Commerce and extend to him warmest best 2-24 wishes for continued success and personal happiness in the future; 2-25 and, be it further 2-26 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-27 prepared for Mr. Knauth as an expression of high regard by the 3-1 Legislature of the State of Texas. 3-2 Legislature of the State of Texas. 3-3 Sadler 3-4 H.C.R.
