CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, Floyd and Irene Weger will be honored for their
1-2 numerous musical contributions to their community at the annual "I
1-3 Love Paris" celebration, which will be held on February 20, 1993,
1-4 in the Weger Performing Arts Center at Paris High School; and
1-5 WHEREAS, These devoted educators have inspired several
1-6 generations of Paris High School students to appreciate the joy of
1-7 making music, and they have brought great pride to the city of
1-8 Paris by encouraging the proliferation of musical events throughout
1-9 the school and the community; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Weger were married in 1938 while they
1-11 were both studying music at New York City's famed Julliard School;
1-12 they decided to continue sharing their tremendous talent by
1-13 teaching and guiding young people who shared their love of music;
1-14 and
1-15 WHEREAS, After completing their studies in 1941, the Wegers
1-16 moved to Paris; Mr. Weger took a job as a conductor for Paris
1-17 school bands while Mrs. Weger began teaching on a volunteer basis,
1-18 but when her husband was called away to serve his nation during
1-19 World War II, she took over his teaching duties and stayed with the
1-20 school system for the next three decades; and
1-21 WHEREAS, Between the two of them, Mr. and Mrs. Weger
1-22 accumulated 73 years of teaching experience; when Mrs. Weger
1-23 retired in 1977 and her husband followed suit in 1978, they were
1-24 teaching the sons and daughters of many of their original students;
2-1 and
2-2 WHEREAS, This remarkable couple had a profound effect on the
2-3 music program at Paris High School; they founded the school's first
2-4 symphonic-style band and the first 100-voice a capella choir, and
2-5 they led the bands to top awards at countless competitions all over
2-6 the state; and
2-7 WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Weger have not limited their
2-8 contributions to the school programs; Mr. Weger dedicates each
2-9 summer to directing the all-volunteer Paris Municipal Band, which
2-10 is said to be the oldest municipal band in Texas, and he and his
2-11 wife also devote much of their time and talent to musical
2-12 competitions and festivals throughout the Southwest; and
2-13 WHEREAS, Many of Mr. and Mrs. Weger's former students, as
2-14 well as their children, have gone on to have brilliant and
2-15 fulfilling careers in music, and this is perhaps the greatest
2-16 tribute to their success as teachers; their son, Steve, is an
2-17 assistant professor of music at Texas Christian University and
2-18 principal trumpet with the Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra and
2-19 Symphony, while their daughter, Jeanie, is a flute instructor at
2-20 Southern Methodist University and principal flute with the Dallas
2-21 Symphony; and
2-22 WHEREAS, In fact, the Wegers seem to have founded a musical
2-23 dynasty; their daughter-in-law, Nancy Weger, and son-in-law, Lorin
2-24 Larson, also have flourishing musical careers, and several of their
2-25 five grandchildren have already ventured into the world of music;
2-26 and
2-27 WHEREAS, The Wegers have devoted more than half a century to
3-1 expanding the musical opportunities available to all Paris
3-2 residents, and in doing so they have brought music, laughter, and
3-3 community fellowship to their many friends and neighbors there;
3-4 they have given selflessly of their time and expertise, and their
3-5 legacy of good works will never be forgotten, so it is fitting that
3-6 they be honored in the hall that was named as a tribute to them;
3-7 now, therefore, be it
3-8 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
3-9 hereby honor Floyd and Irene Weger for their tireless efforts to
3-10 bring joy and music into the lives of all Paris residents and
3-11 extend to them warmest best wishes for many more years of continued
3-12 success and happiness; and, be it further
3-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-14 prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Weger as an expression of high regard by
3-15 the Legislature of the State of Texas.
