H.C.R. No. 46 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, Dr. John Marion Ellis of Mount Pleasant, a respected 1-2 physician and leading expert on the benefits of Vitamin B-6, has 1-3 recently retired from medical practice, drawing to a close a 1-4 distinguished career that spanned a half century of dedicated 1-5 service to his nation and community; and 1-6 WHEREAS, In recognition of the significant contributions he 1-7 has made to the citizens of Northeast Texas and to medical 1-8 research, the Titus County Memorial Hospital held a retirement 1-9 dinner and reception in his honor on January 8, 1993; and 1-10 WHEREAS, A long-time resident of Mount Pleasant, Dr. Ellis 1-11 was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and was graduated from The 1-12 University of Texas School of Medicine at Galveston in 1942; and 1-13 WHEREAS, When the United States entered World War II, he 1-14 dutifully answered his country's call, serving as an orthopedic 1-15 surgeon with the United States Army Medical Corps, and contributed 1-16 his extensive medical skills following V-E Day as a special 1-17 investigator with the International War Crimes Commission; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Upon military discharge and the completion of 1-19 residencies at hospitals in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Ellis returned 1-20 to Mount Pleasant to administer to the medical needs of the 1-21 community, and in 1950 began a successful career in private 1-22 practice; and 1-23 WHEREAS, During the course of his medical practice, which was 1-24 to last the next 42 years, Dr. Ellis delivered more than 700 babies 2-1 and performed or assisted with nearly 3,000 surgical operations; 2-2 and 2-3 WHEREAS, He shared a rewarding association with the Titus 2-4 County Memorial Hospital and in 1966 was appointed to serve a 2-5 three-year term on its board of managers; he returned to the board 2-6 when it became an elective body in 1982 and ably served as a board 2-7 member through 1986; and 2-8 WHEREAS, In addition, he contributed his wealth of 2-9 organizational skills as temporary hospital administrator in 1969 2-10 and was appointed medical director of clinical research in 1990; 2-11 and 2-12 WHEREAS, His extensive accomplishments in the field of 2-13 research are well known; Dr. Ellis began studying the effects of 2-14 Vitamin B-6 deficiency on the human body in the early 1960s, and is 2-15 one of the foremost authorities on the subject today; and 2-16 WHEREAS, The author or coauthor of several books and numerous 2-17 journal articles, he has lectured professionally across the nation 2-18 and in Europe and plans to maintain an active involvement in the 2-19 field as a medical consultant to both the federal and state 2-20 government; and 2-21 WHEREAS, In recognition of the vast contributions he has made 2-22 as a local practitioner and medical scholar, the Titus County 2-23 Chamber of Commerce named Dr. Ellis its Citizen of the Year in 2-24 1981; and 2-25 WHEREAS, Throughout his many endeavors, he has enjoyed the 2-26 love and support of his wife of 46 years, Lucille Haenni Ellis, and 2-27 the couple's four fine children, Joan Roberts, Jeffrey Ellis, John 3-1 Ellis, Jr., and Gina Baldwin; and 3-2 WHEREAS, An illustrious physician, Dr. Ellis has shown 3-3 consummate care and concern for each of his patients, and his 3-4 adherence to the finest principles of the medical arts is indeed 3-5 worthy of special legislative praise and recognition; now, 3-6 therefore, be it 3-7 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas 3-8 hereby congratulate Dr. John Marion Ellis on the occasion of his 3-9 retirement and extend to him best wishes for all his future 3-10 endeavors; and, be it further 3-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-12 prepared for him as an expression of highest regard by the 3-13 Legislature of the State of Texas. 3-14 prepared for him as an expression of highest regard by the 3-15 Legislature of the State of Texas. 3-16 Ramsay 3-17 H.C.R.
