CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, Arnold "Sam" Winkelmann, an esteemed resident of
1-2 Washington County, died on February 5, 1993, at the age of 79, and
1-3 his passing has profoundly saddened his family and his many friends
1-4 throughout the community; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Born on October 1, 1913, to Charles and Charlotte
1-6 Winkelmann, Mr. Winkelmann lived most of his life in Washington
1-7 County, where he enjoyed a well-deserved reputation as an active
1-8 member of the community as well as a successful farmer, rancher,
1-9 dairyman, and horsebreeder; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Mr. Winkelmann also was noted for his exemplary
1-11 dedication to public service and, beginning with a tour of military
1-12 duty during World War II, he established a pattern of unstinting
1-13 service to the local community, to his state, and to his country
1-14 that he maintained for the remainder of his life; and
1-15 WHEREAS, Enlisting in the United States Army as a young man,
1-16 he was assigned to the 124th Horse Cavalry; attaining the rank of
1-17 sergeant, he began to demonstrate the leadership skills that
1-18 subsequently would lead to his promotion to second lieutenant and
1-19 eventually distinguish him as he led his unit during the fighting
1-20 in the China-Burma-India theater of operations; and
1-21 WHEREAS, On his return home after the war, Mr. Winkelmann
1-22 devoted himself to his farming, ranching, and dairy pursuits,
1-23 building a successful family business that included his abiding
1-24 interest in breeding and raising quarter horses; and
2-1 WHEREAS, Respected and admired for the success he achieved in
2-2 his own enterprise, he shared his extensive knowledge and
2-3 experience with others in the community, and he was especially
2-4 effective in this regard as supervisor of the Brenham district
2-5 office of the Texas Department of Agriculture, a post he capably
2-6 filled until his retirement in 1979; and
2-7 WHEREAS, Actively involved in local civic affairs, he served
2-8 on the Blinn College board of trustees for 16 years, including a
2-9 four-year term as chairman of the board from 1968 to 1972; he also
2-10 gave generously of his time and energy in service to his fellow
2-11 veterans as a valued member of Buddy Wright Post 48 of the American
2-12 Legion; and
2-13 WHEREAS, In 1977 his proven leadership ability was again
2-14 recognized when the county commissioners court appointed him to
2-15 serve as chairman of the 45-member citizens advisory committee for
2-16 Washington County development; and
2-17 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, this fine gentleman
2-18 manifested a commendable dedication to the values of hard work,
2-19 community service, and selfless regard for the well-being of his
2-20 fellowman, and in doing so he left a legacy that will endure as
2-21 long as his memory is cherished by those whose lives he touched;
2-22 now, therefore, be it
2-23 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
2-24 hereby honor the memory of Arnold "Sam" Winkelmann and extend
2-25 deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of more
2-26 than 50 years, Helen King Winkelmann; to his son, Dr. Sam King
2-27 Winkelmann of Brenham; to his two sisters, Lydia Dreyer of Brenham
3-1 and Bertha Roberts of Richmond; to his sister-in-law, Grace Gregor
3-2 of Pocahontas, Arkansas; and to all of the other family members and
3-3 friends who have mourned his passing; and, be it further
3-4 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-5 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
3-6 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in
3-7 memory of Arnold "Sam" Winkelmann.
