CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, Billie Johnson was recently honored by the Garland
1-2 Chamber of Commerce when she was named the recipient of the Athena
1-3 Award for her significant contributions in the business arena and
1-4 throughout the community; and
1-5 WHEREAS, This outstanding individual began her career in
1-6 banking in the late 1940s, and her diligent efforts and keen
1-7 business acumen ultimately vaulted her to the position of senior
1-8 vice-president in marketing and business development for First
1-9 City, from which she retired in 1992; and
1-10 WHEREAS, A dynamic force in community affairs, Mrs. Johnson
1-11 has served as chairperson for the Garland Mothers March of Dimes,
1-12 president of the Soroptimist International Club of Garland, and
1-13 chairperson of the YWCA Sustaining Membership Drive; she has also
1-14 served as a board member of Garland Community Hospital, the Garland
1-15 Independent School District Vocational Education Advisory Board,
1-16 the YMCA Board, the Garland Branch of the Salvation Army, and the
1-17 Galaxy Homes for Girls; and
1-18 WHEREAS, Her compassionate nature also has led this
1-19 outstanding citizen to found three animal protection and welfare
1-20 organizations in Garland; and
1-21 WHEREAS, The Garland Chamber of Commerce has previously
1-22 recognized Billie Johnson for her tireless efforts, naming her
1-23 Outstanding Chamber of Commerce Committee Chairperson of the Year
1-24 in 1975, and honoring her with the Tall Texan Award in 1981,
2-1 Mrs. Johnson being the first woman so designated; and
2-2 WHEREAS, Other well-deserved awards include recognition as
2-3 the Garland Business Woman of the Year by the Garland Business and
2-4 Professional Women's Club in 1973 and receipt of the Daughters of
2-5 the American Revolution Honor Medal in 1981; and
2-6 WHEREAS, Billie Johnson has shown exemplary dedication to her
2-7 community as a business leader and as a pillar of worthy civic
2-8 concerns, and it is indeed fitting that her many accomplishments be
2-9 given special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
2-10 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
2-11 hereby commend Billie Johnson for earning the Athena Award from the
2-12 Garland Chamber of Commerce and offer her sincere best wishes for
2-13 continued success in all future endeavors; and, be it further
2-14 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-15 prepared for Billie Johnson as an expression of high regard by the
2-16 Legislature of the State of Texas.
