                              HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is proud to
    1-2  honor the coaches and members of the Amarillo High School girls
    1-3  basketball team for their exceptional accomplishments during the
    1-4  1992-1993 season; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Under the capable leadership of head coach Dale
    1-6  Blaut and the team's dedicated assistant coaches, the Amarillo High
    1-7  School squad enjoyed the most successful year in girls basketball
    1-8  competition in the school's history; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, The Lady Sandies are the first team in Amarillo
   1-10  Independent School District history to win 35 games and the fourth
   1-11  to win a state basketball championship; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Their highly successful year is a tribute to the
   1-13  girls' exceptional talent and the loyal team spirit they
   1-14  consistently displayed; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Emerging as the top team in highly competitive
   1-16  District 3-5A, the Amarillo High School Lady Sandies posted an
   1-17  impressive 23-0 record in regular season play to claim the district
   1-18  crown; the team then advanced into the postseason round of
   1-19  competition, where the Lady Sandies continued their string of
   1-20  superb athletic performances; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, In the Region I-5A playoffs, the girls faced their
   1-22  city rival Tascosa, winner of the 1991 state basketball
   1-23  championship; their magnificent showing against the tough opponent
    2-1  resulted in a come-from-behind victory in the final minutes of play
    2-2  as they defeated Tascosa 52 to 49; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, Before 5,499 fans at the Erwin Center in Austin for
    2-4  the state championship game, the dream team made school history by
    2-5  overcoming a strong Corpus Christi King challenge that saw the
    2-6  teams tied twice in the final four minutes of play; the Lady
    2-7  Sandies held off their opponents' comeback attempt to emerge the
    2-8  Class 5A girls state basketball champions with a season record of
    2-9  35 wins and one loss; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, The Lady Sandies basketball team's unprecedented
   2-11  success is attributable to the exceptional guidance of the coaching
   2-12  staff and to the consistent team play, pressure defense, and
   2-13  competitive spirit that characterized the overall performance of
   2-14  team members Jan Ruzowski, Stefanie Andrus, Tracie Swayden, Kim
   2-15  Linder, Stephanie Jones, Brandi Williams, Amy Adams, Michelle
   2-16  Maxwell, Farrah Stuart, Natalie Waugh, Kristen Paris, Pam Anderson,
   2-17  and Christy Kirkland; and
   2-18        WHEREAS, These young athletes and their coaches have brought
   2-19  honor to themselves, Amarillo High School, and their community; the
   2-20  Lady Sandies are truly deserving of the recognition bestowed on
   2-21  them; now, therefore, be it
   2-22        RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-23  hereby pay tribute to the Amarillo High School Lady Sandies and
   2-24  their coaches for winning the 1993 Class 5A girls state basketball
   2-25  championship and express its best wishes for continued success in
    3-1  the future; and, be it further
    3-2        RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the
    3-3  team members and the coaching staff as an expression of the high
    3-4  regard of the Texas Legislature.
