                                 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The death of Alfred Giles III on March 10, 1993, at
    1-2  the age of 72, has brought a great loss to the many friends and
    1-3  relatives of this distinguished West Texan; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, A native and longtime resident of the state,
    1-5  Mr. Giles was born August 26, 1920, in San Antonio and worked for
    1-6  Shell Oil and Gulf Oil companies as a college student; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, During World War II, he served with the Royal
    1-8  Canadian Air Force for three years as a pilot officer and flying
    1-9  instructor before he transferred to the United States Army Air
   1-10  Corps; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, After he returned from the war, Mr. Giles continued
   1-12  his education and earned bachelor of arts and master of science
   1-13  degrees from the University of Oklahoma; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, In 1948 he embarked on a highly successful career in
   1-15  the oil industry with Ohio Oil Company and distinguished himself as
   1-16  a leading figure in developmental drilling in small fields
   1-17  throughout West Texas and the Canadian province of Saskatchewan;
   1-18  and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Widely regarded throughout his chosen profession for
   1-20  his hard work, diligence, and keen insight, he also served with
   1-21  distinction as a member of the American Association of Petroleum
   1-22  Geologists and the West Texas Geological Society; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Mr. Giles was a man of many interests who enjoyed
   1-24  the close friendships and organizational ties he formed as a member
    2-1  of the Quiet Birdmen and Phi Delta Theta fraternity; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, A deeply religious man, he received his spiritual
    2-3  strength as a devout member of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in
    2-4  Midland, where he served the congregation as a vestry member; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Throughout his life, this exceptional gentleman
    2-6  touched the lives of many people, and though his presence will be
    2-7  deeply missed, his memory will endure in the hearts of those who
    2-8  came to know and love him; now, therefore, be it
    2-9        RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-10  hereby pay tribute to the life of Alfred Giles III and extend
   2-11  sincere sympathy to the members of his family:  to his two sons,
   2-12  Alfred Giles  IV and John G.  Giles; to his brother, Robin T.
   2-13  Giles; to his sister, Laura E. Mullen; to his three grandchildren;
   2-14  and to his many other relatives and friends; and, be it further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-16  prepared for the members of his family and that when the house of
   2-17  representatives and senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory
   2-18  of Alfred Giles III.
