                              HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas Tech University women's basketball team
    1-2  brought great honor and prestige to the university, to the
    1-3  Southwest Conference, and to Texans everywhere by its outstanding
    1-4  achievement in winning the 1993 national title with a hard-fought
    1-5  84-82 victory over Ohio State University in the finals of the
    1-6  National Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament;
    1-7  and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Led by national Player of the Year Sheryl Swoopes,
    1-9  who shattered the NCAA record for most points scored in a
   1-10  championship game with a phenomenal 47 points against a tough
   1-11  Buckeye squad and averaged more than 35 points per game throughout
   1-12  the tournament with 177 points in the team's five tournament games,
   1-13  the Lady Raiders emerged as the most dominant team in women's
   1-14  college basketball in 1993; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, The Lady Raiders' performance in the tournament
   1-16  capped a superb 31-3 season in which they also won the Southwest
   1-17  Conference co-championship; the team then continued its season-long
   1-18  dominance of the conference by winning the SWC postseason
   1-19  tournament, which gave the team an automatic berth in the NCAA
   1-20  playoffs; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Playing in the West Region against formidable
   1-22  opposition, the Lady Raiders handily disposed of Washington
   1-23  University 70-64, Southern California 87-67, and Colorado 79-54 to
    2-1  gain a share of the national spotlight as one of the Final Four
    2-2  teams vying for the NCAA crown; making the most of their first
    2-3  appearance among the Final Four, the Lady Raiders made their debut
    2-4  a memorable one, beating top-ranked Vanderbilt University 60-46 to
    2-5  set up the climactic showdown for the national title; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Their 84-82 triumph in the tournament final, the
    2-7  team's 19th consecutive win, proved to be the fitting culmination
    2-8  to a superb year of competition for the Texas Tech team, which
    2-9  benefited not only from the superior talent on its roster but also
   2-10  from the capable leadership of Head Coach Marsha Sharp, who molded
   2-11  a group of outstanding young athletes into a cohesive, selfless
   2-12  championship-caliber unit; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, The students and faculty at Texas Tech University,
   2-14  the university's loyal alumni, Southwest Conference sports fans,
   2-15  and Texans everywhere are extremely proud of these fine young women
   2-16  and their exceptional coach, and the great honor they have brought
   2-17  to Texas with their national championship is indeed worthy of the
   2-18  highest praise and recognition; now, therefore, be it
   2-19        RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-20  hereby congratulate Head Coach Marsha Sharp and the Texas Tech
   2-21  University Lady Raiders on their truly superb achievement in
   2-22  winning the 1993 NCAA women's basketball championship and extend
   2-23  best wishes for continued success in the future; and, be it further
   2-24        RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
   2-25  for the members of the team and the coaching staff as an expression
    3-1  of high esteem by the Legislature of the State of Texas.
