H.C.R. No. 113 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, Sheryl Swoopes has achieved outstanding success in 1-2 women's basketball, exhibiting tremendous dedication and athletic 1-3 skill at South Plains College and at Texas Tech University, where 1-4 she led the Lady Raiders to the National Collegiate Athletic 1-5 Association (NCAA) 1993 women's basketball national championship; 1-6 and 1-7 WHEREAS, A native of Brownfield, this superlative 1-8 student-athlete began her college career at South Plains College, 1-9 playing for the Lady Texans during the 1989-1990 and 1990-1991 1-10 seasons and garnering many well-deserved honors, including being 1-11 named Most Valuable Player of the Western Junior College Athletic 1-12 Conference in 1989-1990 and 1990-1991, and Kodak All-American in 1-13 1989-1990 and 1990-1991; she also received National Junior Athletic 1-14 Association All-American recognition both years, and was voted 1-15 Junior College Player of the Year in 1991 by the Women's Basketball 1-16 Coaches Association; and 1-17 WHEREAS, For her exceptional performance, Ms. Swoopes was 1-18 invited to participate in the USA Olympic Festival Trials in 1-19 preparation for the 1992 Olympic Games; and 1-20 WHEREAS, During her senior season at Texas Tech University, 1-21 this tremendous competitor led the Lady Raiders to a Southwest 1-22 Conference Championship, and Southwest Conference Post-Season 1-23 Classic title, pouring in 53 points, a Reunion Arena record, 1-24 against highly regarded Texas in the tournament championship game; 2-1 and 2-2 WHEREAS, Her extraordinary accomplishments continued in the 2-3 NCAA tournament, and during those five contests she posted record 2-4 highs for most total points, 177, and most free throws, 57; she 2-5 saved her finest effort for the championship game against Ohio 2-6 State, tallying 47 points, the most ever by any player in a men's 2-7 or women's NCAA championship game, and for her outstanding 2-8 achievements she was selected as the most valuable player in the 2-9 NCAA championship tournament; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Her hardwood prowess during the 1992-1993 campaign 2-11 earned Ms. Swoopes myriad honors, including the Southwest 2-12 Conference Player of the Year selection by the Austin 2-13 American-Statesman, Dallas Morning News, Houston Post, and Houston 2-14 Chronicle, and National Player of the Year selection by Sports 2-15 Illustrated, Women's Basketball News Service, and the USA Today 2-16 "Women's College Basketball Midseason Report"; and 2-17 WHEREAS, This gifted athlete's extraordinary accomplishments 2-18 at South Plains College and Texas Tech University have set new 2-19 standards of excellence in women's college basketball, and it is 2-20 indeed appropriate that she be given special legislative 2-21 recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-22 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas 2-23 hereby congratulate Sheryl Swoopes on her superb athletic career, 2-24 which justly culminated in an NCAA women's basketball national 2-25 championship, and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued 2-26 success in all future endeavors; and, be it further 2-27 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-1 prepared for Sheryl Swoopes as an expression of high regard by the 3-2 Legislature of the State of Texas. 3-3 Legislature of the State of Texas. 3-4 Rudd 3-5 H.C.R.
